Cheek and Chin Implants
In Manhattan, Long Island, & Surrounding Areas
Although many people have a surplus of facial fat that they seek to reduce through liposuction, especially liposelection, of the face, an equally common problem is the reduction of facial volume as we age. The youthful face is characterized not only by smooth skin, but by pleasing contours. While a facelift can help the skin to achieve smoothness, and injectable fillers and Botox can reduce wrinkles in localized areas, they cannot help patients who have either lost facial volume as a result of age or are unsatisfied with the shape of their cheeks and/or chin. However, facial implants can help these patients achieve a natural, pleasant, youthful appearance.
Balance
According to scientific studies, the human brain has a very complicated algorithm for distinguishing what makes a face attractive. One of the central components for making a face attractive is a sense of balance and proportion among all the features of the face. Chin, cheekbones, brows, the mouth, and the nose, all play an important part in making the face appear balanced. If one of these features is out of place or insufficient to play its part, the face appears deficient. In particular, high cheekbones are often regarded as an indicator of a noble face. Facial implants can augment your chin, your jaw line, or your cheekbone to give your face just the right look.
The Right Combination
Facelifts or neck lifts give good cosmetic results for many patients, removing slack or excess skin from the jaw, jowls, and neck to give a more youthful appearance. But for others, a facelift alone cannot give adequate results. For people with receding chins or poorly-defined jawbones, a facelift or neck lift can just highlight the weak features of the face. For these people, a facial implant can give just the right facial contours to make a fine, balanced appearance.
Similarly, a facelift for a patient with inadequate facial volume or poorly-defined cheekbones can give a person a hollow, tired, even gaunt or unhealthy appearance. Cheek implants can help shape the skin to give a positive result for these patients.
Implants can also work for patients whose fat conceals or obscures the features of the face. Implants can give better definition to the bone structure of the face, giving it a stronger, slimmer appearance.
The Procedure
The placing of facial implants is performed on an outpatient basis under local anesthesia and is often combined with facelift surgery or other facial surgeries such as a rhinoplasty. A small incision is made, usually inside the mouth to conceal any scarring, and the implant is inserted into a pocket directly against the bone. The implant may be secured directly to the bone to prevent it from drifting.
The Recovery
Several days of swelling and discomfort can be expected as a result of your facial implant surgery. This may be accompanied by some minor bruising. You will most likely experience some discomfort in smiling, talking, and eating. Incisions inside the mouth may mean dietary and oral hygiene restrictions for the period of recovery. In general, you can expect to return to work after a few days. It may take as long as several weeks for your face to achieve its final look.
