Chin Implants
New York City, Manhattan, and Long Island, New York
People with weak chins can improve the balance and proportions of their facial features with chin implants. Generally speaking, the chin should extend as far as the lower lip. Congenital deficiencies, trauma to the jaw, or an underdeveloped jaw can cause the chin to recede, resulting in poor definition between the chin and neck and a "chinless" look. If you are unhappy with the contours of your chin, then chin implants may be just the thing for you. A consultation with an experienced plastic surgeon is your first step toward your improved, more confident look.
The Chin Implant Procedure
A typical chin implant surgery lasts about an hour and requires only local anesthesia, though general anesthesia is an option. Implants are usually inserted through an incision made inside the mouth which eliminates any risk of visible scarring after the procedure. Some procedures may require an incision be made under the chin. If this is the case, the incision will be within the fold or crease underneath the chin where it will be unnoticeable. Once the incision is made, New York cosmetic surgeon, Dr. Jerrold Gendler will create a pocket in the chin where the implant will be placed. The implant itself may be inserted and removed several times during the surgery so that Dr. Gendler can re-sculpt it for optimal aesthetic results.
Chin Implant Recovery
Some swelling and discoloration should be expected in the few days after the surgery. Most of this should subside within seven to ten days. You will be prescribed pain medication and antibiotics to minimize the risk of infection. Detailed post-surgical dietary and oral hygiene instructions will be provided to ensure that your healing process goes smoothly. You will likely experience some numbness and difficulty smiling in the first few post-op days.
You can expect to return to normal activities within a few days. Contact sports and any activity that puts you at risk of disturbing the implant should be avoided for at least a month. However, exercise is recommended as soon as possible. This will aid the healing process and lessen your risk of complications.
