How does Juvederm work?

Like other popular injectable fillers such as Perlane® and Restylane®, Juvederm® is injected into the skin where wrinkles are present. Its active ingredient is hyaluronic acid a chemical naturally produced by the body to maintain tautness and volume to the skin. When Juvederm is injected, the levels of this chemical are restored to the problem area, causing the skin to lift, effectively smoothing out the wrinkles.

Juvederm is the latest injectable filler to get FDA approval. Its active ingredient is the same as Perlane and Restylane. The difference is in the texture of the filler itself. Juvederm has more of a liquid texture, whereas Perlane and Restylane have a granular texture. Each brand of filler has its own advantages, and each is best suited for certain types of wrinkles. Dr. Gendler will be able to advise you as to which type of filler is right for you.

Juvederm has proven to be especially effective in treating lips and wrinkles around the lips. If your lips are showing signs of aging then Dr. Gendler will probably recommend Juvederm treatments over the other options. He may recommend Perlane injections for other areas of your face.

Your Juvederm procedure

Depending on the size of the area you wish to have treated, your procedure may last anywhere from a few minutes to an hour. A very small needle is used for minimal discomfort and results are immediate. Expect a little bit of swelling or redness that should subside within a couple days. Follow-up treatments every 4 to 8 months will be necessary to maintain your new appearance.
