Rhinoplasty
Serving New York City, Manhattan, Long Island, and surrounding areas
Unlike many facial procedures such as Eyelid Surgery or Facelifts, rhinoplasty is not a correction of the effects of aging. Instead, rhinoplasty is typically a corrective procedure for either perceived congenital cosmetic defects or cosmetic defects as a result of past injury. As such, rhinoplasty is performed on adult patients of all ages. With parental consent, rhinoplasty may even be performed on older teenagers whose noses have finished developing.
Common problems corrected with rhinoplasty include:
- Bridge too wide or too long
- Bridge has humps, bumps, or unappealing slope
- Crooked bridge
- Tip malformity
- Nostrils too wide
- Breathing difficulties
If you suffer from any of these conditions, Dr. Gendler may recommend rhinoplasty. Sometimes, however, cosmetic problems perceived in the nose may actually be due to an imbalance with other parts of the face or profile, and cheek or chin implants may be recommended instead.
The Rhinoplasty Procedure
Dr. Gendler will listen to your input on what type of nose you desire. Then, after evaluating the internal and external structure of your nose, the size and shape of your nose, as well as skin elasticity and other factors relevant to your face's receptivity to reshaping, Dr. Gendler will design a plan for your new nose.
The rhinoplasty may either be performed as a closed procedure, in which the reshaping is performed without any visible incisions, or as an open procedure, which will leave a scar on the columella, the skin between the nostrils. More drastic alterations usually require open rhinoplasty.
During the procedure, your cartilage or bone may need to be altered to make your nose appear narrower and/or straighter. This may involve the removing of bone or sometimes a graft of bone or cartilage from suitable donor sites in the body.
The full results of rhinoplasty often take many months to become evident, but they are permanent.
